The first post, why a blog?

Rachelle Goldenberg • October 31, 2024

It's official, I have a blog and I know how to use it.

I've finally taken the plunge to establish my online presence, with a key element being a dedicated space to share my discoveries, experiences, and drafts of upcoming publications. Welcome to this new chapter, featuring an old friend, the blog.

I’m not new to blogging; in fact, I take pride in the powerful network of fascinating women I encountered during my time in the BlogHer community. This opportunity arose while I was primarily focused on my local community and child welfare. It might seem unusual for someone in my professional arena to venture into blogging, but I found the experience enriching and full of unexpected benefits. (A shout-out to Broadway for the complimentary tickets that allowed me to see Avenue Q and Beyond the Rainbow, inspiring my writing all those years ago.) Even then, I longed for an easy way to connect and share information with my followers.

With that spirit in mind, I'm thrilled to embark on this new journey as I pursue my passion project centered around self-efficacy, care, and fostering a community equipped with tools for well-being. I look forward to you visiting regularly for sneak peeks of future publications, insights from my experiences, and updates I plan to share on the blog.

We all desire for children to flourish in school—not just in their academics but also in their emotional and social lives. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that kids today encounter numerous pressures. Stress, anxiety, and even trauma can hinder their focus and learning. This is where the idea of school wellness centers becomes significant. These spaces are far from your conventional classrooms. Envision a serene, spa-like atmosphere designed to assist students in managing their emotions and fostering resilience. Picture inviting corners, soothing colors, and an emphasis on sensory experiences. It’s a setting where students can learn to navigate overwhelming feelings such as anger, frustration, and anxiety. Wellness centers adopt a trauma-informed approach, acknowledging how challenging experiences can influence a child's growth. The aim is to cultivate a safe haven where students feel supported and empowered to take charge of their own well-being. Why Wellness Centers are Essential Early Intervention: Wellness centers adopt a proactive stance on mental health, providing assistance before issues escalate. Holistic Approach: They cater to the whole child, understanding the link between emotional health and academic success. Skill Development: Students acquire coping skills and self-regulation techniques that will serve them throughout their lives. What Makes a Wellness Center Effective? Safe and Inviting Space: The environment should be comfortable and welcoming, setting it apart from the standard classroom. Qualified Staff: It’s critical to have professionals skilled in mental health and trauma-informed care. Collaboration with Teachers: Educators play a vital role in recognizing students who might benefit from the services offered by the center. The Call to Action: Champion Wellness in Your School As parents and community members, our voices hold significant power. Let’s advocate for the establishment of wellness centers in our schools. By emphasizing mental health and emotional well-being, we can provide our children with the essential tools to tackle life’s challenges and achieve their fullest potential. Reach out to your school administrators, PTA, and school board members to express your support for the development of a wellness center in your local school. If your school already has a center, consider finding ways to support its operations while respecting the sanctity of the space; it should remain a valuable resource for our children. Together, we can foster a school environment where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. As always, please reach out if you would like to see more information or have suggestions for a future topic.
